The following preparatory steps must be carried out:
Coordination of mechanical system and electronics: User-friendly input of machine data with the configuring software (in the scope of supply of the configuring package)
Specify traversing paths:
For simple point-to-point positioning: Specify end position and traversing speed via the S7 CPU.
Complex traversing profiles: Traversing programs created with parameter screen forms acc. to DIN 66025 on the programming device or in teach-in mode
The parameterization data is stored retentively on the FM 453:
Machine data
Tool compensation data
Traverse programs

The FM 453 handles the actual positioning of the axes. The drive interface controls the motors:
Servo motor: -10 V to +10 V.
Stepper motor: Pulse/direction
Encoders (SSI or incremental) report the current axis position. The stepper motor can also be operated without encoders.
